This universal newborn health screening is done in the first few days after a baby is born. It includes a small blood test, a hearing test, and a heart check. These are usually done in the hospital before you go home, or at the first doctor or nurse visit if you have a home birth. The blood test only needs a tiny drop from the baby’s heel.

This program helps children under 21 who have special medical needs. Public Health staff helps families apply for the program, and if the child qualifies, they work with them to get care, therapy, medical equipment, and medicine, and they attend meetings to speak up for children who may need extra help. Healthy Smiles Program

Provides dental screenings for preschool and elementary school age children.

The Healthy Smiles team at Public Health visits each preschool and school in Plumas County at least once a year. They check children's teeth, put on fluoride to help prevent cavities, and teach kids and parents about good dental care. Healthy Smiles works with teachers and nurses to help families find dental treatment and a regular dentist. The team shares dental health tips at schools and during home visits with Family First home visiting nurses.

You can get checkups during pregnancy at Plumas Rural Health Center until about 36 weeks, then deliver your baby at a nearby hospital that you choose. The care team helps you plan where to give birth and makes sure that the transfer goes smoothly. After your baby is born, you, your baby and family can keep getting your healthcare in the Quincy clinic. They offer: pregnancy checkups, tests, ultrasounds, and childbirth classes, baby care like checkups, help with feeding, and medical treatments, care for moms after birth, like birth control and women’s health, and a 24/7 phone line for mom and baby support. This free program gives support to new parents in Plumas and Sierra Counties. The team works together with parents and their healthcare team to coordinate all newborn family needs. The program works with birth and adoptive parents, foster families and grandparents. They offer family support, home and telehealth visits, certified postpartum doula and infant massage services, and breastfeeding/lactation and feeding support with a physician, as well as, healthy meal deliveries. The program supports all forms of infant feeding and is also available to help with families dealing with pregnancy loss. They provide health screenings and interventions for postpartum depression.
